Fencing Bendigo
Fences and gates installed across Greater Bendigo
Fencing for Greater Bendigo homes and farms, installed by our local fencing contractors anywhere from Eaglehawk to Heathcote. Choose Colorbond, timber, farm or chain mesh fencing, on Huntly and Strathfieldsaye estates or rural blocks near Marong.
If a gate needs hanging or a fence needs fixing, we can quote that too. On a sloping block, a sleeper retaining wall of thick timber or concrete beams stops the bank sliding.

Colorbond fencing in Bendigo
Colorbond steel is strong and private, and it won't rot or need painting.
Several new Bendigo estates ask for it in the colour Woodland Grey, and we install it to their rules.

New estates in Huntly and Strathfieldsaye
Imagine's guidelines in Strathfieldsaye ask for Woodland Grey Colorbond side fences, rising from 1.2 m at the front to 1.8 m. On a standard lot, no fence is allowed in the first 3 m from the street.

Viewpoint in Huntly
On Stage 15, the fence rules sit in a covenant, a restriction written into your land title: Woodland Grey Colorbond, up to 1.8 m. Check your own stage's covenant, and give us the estate and stage when you ask for a quote.

Low front fences in established suburbs
Fourteen parts of Greater Bendigo, including Golden Square and White Hills, have neighbourhood character policies to keep each street's look. They favour low or see-through front fences that suit the age of the house, no higher than 1.2 m.

When the 1.2 m guideline counts
It guides planning permit decisions, so it only matters when your fence needs a planning permit.

Flood-prone land by the creeks and at Marong
Bendigo Creek and its streams, and McIvor Creek at Heathcote, have a long history of flooding, according to council's planning scheme. Parts of Greater Bendigo sit in flood overlays, which are planning controls for land that floods.

The Marong floodway
In Marong's Floodway Overlay, any fence other than post and wire or post and rail has extra planning requirements. We install both of those.

Rural Living blocks and farm-style fences
There's plenty of Rural Living land around Strathfieldsaye and Heathcote, zoned for homes on large rural blocks. In one Strathfieldsaye precinct, the character policy asks for no front fence and farm-style side fences.

Shared fences
Sharing the cost of a boundary fence
Each side normally pays half
Neighbours generally pay equal shares of a dividing fence, the one on the boundary line, under the Fences Act in Victoria.
Sort it out before any work
You need your neighbour's consent, or to have followed the Fences Act process, before work starts. The first step in that process is a fencing notice, a letter to next door with the work and its cost. If neither happens, vic.gov.au's advice is that next door owes nothing towards it.

Tell us your neighbour's sharing the cost, and the quote will be set out so they can follow it too.
Ground and bush
Ground and bush around Bendigo
On a site visit we check how the block falls, what grows on the fence line and how we'll get materials in.

Slate and quartz
A 1976 state soil survey of the Bendigo district describes steeply tilted slate and sandstone, with quartz reefs (thick veins of quartz) running through it.
Shallow, stony soil
The same survey found shallow, stony soils with sandy loam on top, so post holes can meet rock not far down. Where that's likely on your line, your quote will set out how the holes get dug.
Bush all around
Bendigo is a regional city surrounded by forest. Where land is bushfire prone, you can clear a 4 m strip beside a boundary fence put up before 10 September 2009. That 4 m is the most, counting both sides, and next door's side needs their written permission.
Permits and rules
Bendigo fence permits and planning rules
Most fences around Bendigo need no permit at all. Front fences, corner blocks, pools and land under a planning overlay are the cases to check.
Your council is the City of Greater Bendigo, or Mount Alexander Shire in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead.
Check with council
- Schedule 3
Back and side fences
You can build a back or side fence up to 2 m tall without a building permit. Near a street corner, anything taller than 1 m above footpath level needs one if it's less than 9 m from the corner.
Building Regulations - Regulation 89
Front fences
A front fence close to the street, within 3 m, can reach 1.5 m in timber or steel with no building permit. In brick or concrete, it's 1.2 m. Marong's residential streets and Strathfieldsaye's mixed-use areas get 1.2 m under the planning scheme, so ask the City before going higher there.
Building Regulations - Heritage Overlay
Heritage precincts
Heritage Overlays are planning controls that protect historic streets and buildings. In precincts such as Rowan Street, Quarry Hill and Long Gully, a fence in plain view of a street or park needs a planning permit.
Heritage Overlay, clause 43.01 - Bushfire
Bushfire-prone land
Most of Greater Bendigo is bushfire prone. Parts of it also sit under a Bushfire Management Overlay, a planning control where the bushfire hazard is higher, so check with the City first.
Planning scheme, clause 02.03 - Estate guidelines
New estates
Estate guidelines can decide a fence's material, colour, height and where it has to stop. Harlowe's guidelines allow no fence in front of the house, and side fences must stop at least 500 mm behind its front wall.
Harlowe guidelines - Pool barriers
Pool and spa fences
Pool and spa barrier fences always require a building permit, at any height.

Bendigo fencing questions
Fencing in Bendigo FAQs
Not for most fences. Timber or steel boundary fences are fine without a building permit up to 2 m, or 1.5 m within 3 m of the street. Pool barriers always need one, and in a heritage precinct or on flood-prone land, check the planning rules with council first.
Not without approval. On most streets, the building rules limit a street-front fence to 1.5 m, and going higher needs council's consent. If you also need a planning permit, the character policies for suburbs such as Eaglehawk and Kennington ask for 1.2 m or less.
Not on the side boundaries at Imagine, Harlowe or Viewpoint's Stage 15, which all ask for Colorbond. For any other estate, the rules will usually be in its design guidelines or on your land title.
Often, yes. Greater Bendigo's Land Subject to Inundation Overlay covers land that floods, and inside it a like-for-like replacement in the same spot needs no planning permit. A different design is worth running past the City first.
Besides length, height and type, stony ground adds work here, since post holes in shallow soil over slate are slow to dig. Your free quote sets out the whole price in writing. It also confirms whether we can cart the old fence away.
