Fencing Sunbury

Fences, gates and retaining walls around Sunbury

Sunbury fencing, installed by our local fencing contractors: capped paling with a timber rail on top, chain mesh and Colorbond. Estates like Kingsfield ask for capped paling, and we install farm fencing too, in Sunbury, Bulla and Diggers Rest.

We'll also install a new gate, fix a damaged fence or build a sleeper retaining wall. Its sleepers are thick timber or concrete boards, slotted between posts to keep a sloping bank in place.

    Colorbond fencing in Sunbury

Colorbond steel is strong, keeps next door's yard out of view, and won't rot like timber.

Estate rules on it vary in Sunbury. Everley doesn't allow Colorbond, while Redstone asks for charcoal Colorbond in two of its six neighbourhoods.

    Timber fencing in Sunbury

A timber paling fence is private, and it's simple to patch if a paling cracks.

It's the fence several of Sunbury's newer estates ask for, often with capping, a timber strip fixed along the top. Redstone sets the finish by neighbourhood, from raw treated pine to a charcoal stain.

How it works

How a Sunbury fence quote works

  1. Send us the basics

Add a note if you already know there's rock on the line or a steep slope.

  2. We measure if needed

If the job needs a site measure, we'll book one in before we price it.

  3. We send a written quote

There's no charge for it, and no deadline to say yes.

  4. We install the fence

Once the posts are in and the rails are on, we add the palings, Colorbond sheets or wire.

Around Sunbury

Fencing for each part of Sunbury

  1. Homes in the new estates

Kingsfield's guidelines ask for lapped paling, where each paling overlaps the next, 1.8 m high and capped, with the posts showing on both sides. It has to be built within 30 days of your occupancy permit, the sign-off you need before moving in. At Everley, the fence has to be finished before you move in.

  2. Blocks near Jacksons Creek

Jacksons Creek runs through Sunbury in a deep valley, fed by Kismet, Blind and Harpers Creeks. Victoria's SES warns that short bursts of heavy rain can flash-flood these smaller creeks and the drains around them.

    Flood overlays

A flood overlay marks land that can flood. On a block inside one, Hume has to approve most fences through a planning permit. Post and wire and post and rail fences are the exceptions.

  3. Heritage houses in the older streets

Hume's heritage list includes houses in Barkly, Macedon and Station Streets. For older homes like these, we quote picket and timber front fences to match the period of the house.

    Who applies for the permit

If the fence needs a planning permit, you make the application to Hume, and our quote covers the fence itself.

  4. Acreage around Bulla and Diggers Rest

Outside the township, Sunbury is surrounded by rural land: flat volcanic plain broken by volcanic cones and creek valleys. Our installers fence these blocks for stock and horses, in post and wire, ringlock or post and rail.

Shared fences

Boundary fences and your Sunbury neighbours

  1. Each owner usually pays half

The fence on your shared boundary is a dividing fence, and under the Fences Act you and your neighbour normally go halves. Want next door to see the price? We'll write the quote so it can be shared.

  2. Agree before work starts

Your neighbour only has to pay their half if they agreed before work began, or if you followed the Fences Act steps, as vic.gov.au explains. The first step is a fencing notice, which puts the proposed job and price in writing.

    How the Fences Act works
  3. Finding who owns next door

Can't reach the owner? Hume takes online requests for neighbouring property details. Council says it's an application only, so you may not be given them.

  4. Backing onto a park or reserve

If your block borders council land, such as a park or reserve, Hume may contribute to a new fence. That comes under its Half Cost Fencing Policy. Council won't fund a fence that runs along a street.

Ground and slope

Rock and slope around Sunbury

At the measure, we look at how much the block slopes and whether a ute can reach the fence line.

  1. Basalt plain

Sunbury sits on a basalt plain, laid down by old lava flows, and Jacksons Creek has cut deep valleys through it. Along the creek, the lava shows as rocky outcrops.

  2. Rock in the fence line

Where we find rock along the fence line, we'll note it on your quote along with how we'll handle it.

  1. Sloping blocks

On the creek valley sides and around Redstone Hill and Jacksons Hill, blocks can slope. A fence can step down the slope, or sit on a sleeper retaining wall built in the same job.

  2. Retaining wall permits

Hume's fence page says a retaining wall taller than 1 m needs a building permit. Lower walls don't need one, unless they're part of other building work or protect the property next door.

Permits and rules

Sunbury fence permits and Hume council rules

Sunbury comes under Hume City Council, so that's who to ask about your block.

Hume's planning scheme sets what can be built where, and it adds its own fence rules along Jacksons Creek and at heritage places.

Check with council

  • Hume City Council

    Building permits

A fence needs a building permit above 2 m, or above 1.5 m if it's a front fence less than 3 m from the street. Within 9 m of an intersection, it's needed above 1 m. A brick or masonry fence needs one anywhere above 1.2 m.

  • Landscape overlay

    The Jacksons Creek valley

Jacksons Creek, biik wurdha, has its own Significant Landscape Overlay, which is there to keep the valley looking natural. Inside it, a solid paling or Colorbond fence can't go in without a planning permit. An open wire or rail fence up to 1.4 m is exempt if it's more than 50 m from the top of the creek bank.

    Jacksons Creek overlay
  • Heritage Overlay

    Heritage places

Hume's Heritage Overlay protects listed buildings and precincts, including Rupertswood, Emu Bottom, Caloola and the Railway Station Precinct. Listed properties and listed precincts need Hume's planning permit for any fence that can be seen from the street or from a park.

  • Estate guidelines

    Where side fences stop

Everley's side fences have to end 1 m or more short of the closest front wall, or 3 m short on corner lots. On corner lots, Kingsfield wants 4 m measured from the house front, and Maplestone 8 m from the front boundary.

Sunbury fencing questions

Sunbury fencing FAQs

Not for most back and side fences on a house block. Most fences in the Jacksons Creek overlay or a flood overlay need a planning permit, and so does a street-facing fence on a heritage-listed property. Pool barriers are different: every one needs a building permit.

Not in Everley, Kingsfield, Maplestone or Redstone, which all say no front fences. Kingsfield makes an exception where the developer built one, and Redstone only in specially marked precincts.

Hume City Council says it has no power to settle fencing disputes between neighbours. Instead, it refers you to the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria.

Not without a planning permit, if it's a dry stone wall built before 1940. A dry stone wall is built from stones fitted together without mortar. That rule covers most of Hume, but taking out a section to fit a gate is exempt.

Mostly the length, the fence material and its height. A sloping or rocky block can add to it, and so can a retaining wall or the style your estate requires. The quote is free and puts the total in writing before we start digging.
