    Colorbond fencing in Shepparton

Colorbond steel gives you a solid, private boundary you'll rarely have to touch once it's up.

The posts, rails and sheets are all one colour, so both sides of the boundary look the same.

Fencing jobs around Shepparton

  1. Estate fences in Kialla and Shepparton

Seven Creeks in Kialla (Stage 21) asks for a 1.8 m Neetascreen steel fence on side and back boundaries, in a colour called Teatree. Stage 8 of The Vines in Shepparton asks for 1.8 m Colorbond in the same colour. In both, the fence steps down over the first two panels from the front.

  2. The new growth area south east of town

The Shepparton South East plan, approved in June 2025, makes room for about 2,980 new homes beside the Broken River. Where a lot backs onto a bushfire hazard area shown in the plan, it asks for fencing that won't burn. Beside parks, it asks for low fences you can see through.

  3. Blocks near the rivers

Greater Shepparton's planning scheme says parts of the river catchments here are flood prone, and floods have done serious damage in the past. Land covered by a flood overlay has its own fence rules.

  4. Rural living blocks on the edge of town

Greater Shepparton plans for some of its new housing land to be rural living lots of 2 to 8 hectares. On a block that size, we quote for boundary fences, horse paddocks, post and rail and farm gates.

Shared fences

Shared boundary fences in Shepparton

  1. The cost is usually shared

A dividing fence is one that runs along the boundary you share with a neighbour. Under the Fences Act, each owner usually pays half.

  2. Agree on it first

Get your neighbour's consent before work starts, or use the Fences Act's legal process instead. Without one or the other, your neighbour can't be made to pay a share, according to vic.gov.au.

    How the Fences Act works
  3. Rural boundaries

The half share only covers a sufficient fence, the standard the law expects. Between farms, vic.gov.au's example of one is a fence of wire on posts.

  4. A quote you can share

If you're splitting the cost, we can word the quote so it's ready to show your neighbour.

We look at the soil when we measure, and your quote says how the posts will be set.

  1. A flat river plain

Shepparton sits on the Northern Riverine Plain, where streams run north across very flat country.

  2. Loam over heavy clay

A common soil on the plain is loam, a crumbly mix of sand, silt and clay, sitting on medium to heavy clay.

  1. Clay that shrinks and swells

Cracking clays are most common on the northern plains of the Goulburn Broken region. They shrink and crack as they dry, then swell again when they're wet.

  2. Clearing beside a fence

The CFA's fence line rule lets you clear vegetation beside a fence that went up before 10 September 2009 in a bushfire prone area. The cleared strip can total 4 m across both sides, but your neighbour has to agree in writing before you touch theirs.

Permits and rules

Shepparton fence permits, overlays and rules

Height and distance from the street decide most fence permits here.

An overlay is a map layer in the council's planning scheme that puts extra rules on some land, for flooding, heritage or bushfire. Some overlays call for a planning permit as well. Your council can tell you which overlays cover your block, whether that's Greater Shepparton or the Moira, Strathbogie or Campaspe shire.

Where to check

  • Schedule 3

    Tall fences and corners

You'll need a building permit for any fence taller than 2 m, wherever it stands on your block. Near a corner, where two streets meet, the first 9 m of fence needs one once it stands more than 1 m higher than the footpath.

    Building Regulations
  • Regulation 89

    Front fences

Up to 3 m back from the street, front fences can reach 1.5 m without a building permit, or 1.2 m in brick or concrete. Going higher takes a building permit, plus council consent above 1.5 m, or above 2 m on a freeway or main arterial road. Greater Shepparton's housing zones don't change those numbers.

    Building Regulations
  • Floodway Overlay

    Floodways

In Greater Shepparton's Floodway Overlay, timber and steel paling fences and cyclone mesh fences in a residential zone are exempt from a planning permit. A brick, masonry or concrete wall still needs one.

    Floodway Overlay, clause 44.03
  • Inundation Overlay

    Land that floods

In Greater Shepparton's Land Subject to Inundation Overlay, any fence in a residential, commercial or industrial zone is exempt. Elsewhere, such as on farms, only open fences like plain wire are exempt. A solid or cyclone mesh fence there needs a planning permit.

    Inundation Overlay, clause 44.04
  • Heritage Overlay

    Heritage areas

Heritage precincts in Greater Shepparton include Maude Street and Macintosh Street in Shepparton, plus township precincts in Tatura, Murchison and Dookie. They sit under a Heritage Overlay, a planning control on how an older area looks. There, any new fence in sight of a street or park has to go through planning approval first.

    Heritage Overlay, clause 43.01
  • Bushfire Management Overlay

    Bushfire areas

Greater Shepparton's bushfire overlay names areas of Kialla, Mooroopna, Murchison and Shepparton. If your block is in it, check with council before a new fence goes in.

    Bushfire overlay, clause 44.06

Shepparton fencing questions

Fencing in Shepparton FAQs

Usually not: most timber and steel fences don't need a building permit up to 2 m high, or 1.5 m in the front 3 m. Pool and spa barriers always need one, and so do fences over 1 m near a street corner. If your block has a flood, heritage or bushfire overlay, ask the council about extra rules first.

Use the Community Flood Intelligence Portal run by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (CMA). It shows flood maps, and you can search your address for a property flood report. The report includes the estimated 100-year flood level, the height a flood with a 1 in 100 chance each year would reach.

Teatree isn't one of the 15 colours on Colorbond's fencing chart. BlueScope, the company that makes Colorbond, says to ask your fencing supplier when a colour you want isn't listed. Mention Teatree in your quote request and we'll find out what's available.

Greater Shepparton City Council covers Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kialla, Tatura and Dookie. Numurkah is in Moira Shire, Nagambie and Euroa are in Strathbogie Shire, and Echuca is in Campaspe Shire.

It depends mostly on how long and how high the fence is, and what it's made of. Digging post holes in heavy clay takes longer, and so does a job with tight access. Before any work starts, you'll have the full price in writing, and we'll tell you then if we can clear away the old fence.
