Fencing Geelong

New fences, gates and repairs across Geelong

Fencing across Geelong, installed by our local fencing contractors: Colorbond steel, timber, mesh and farm wire. We cover the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast too, and on coastal blocks we use a Colorbond grade made for salt air.

We also install gates and sleeper retaining walls, and we repair fences. A sleeper wall is a row of timber or concrete beams that holds back soil.

    Colorbond fencing in Geelong

Colorbond steel is strong, private and low upkeep, and it comes in plenty of colours.

Near the surf or the bay, ask us which grade of steel suits. Some Armstrong Creek estates don't allow Colorbond, so check your estate's rules first.

    Timber fencing in Geelong

Timber paling fences are private, and a broken paling is easy to swap out.

Several Armstrong Creek estates ask for lapped palings, which overlap with no gaps. They also want a plinth (a board along the bottom) and capping (a board along the top), and we install that style too.

Around Geelong

Fencing jobs around Geelong

  1. New estates around Armstrong Creek

Many of the new estates here have design guidelines that say what fence you can build. Warralily's guidelines ask for lapped timber paling 1.8 to 1.95 m high.

    Before you choose

Check your estate's guidelines and the covenant on your title, a rule written into the land title. Then tell us your estate when you ask for a quote.

  2. Older streets and heritage areas

In older streets, we quote to replace worn-out front and back fences. In heritage precincts such as Newtown Hill and Aphrasia Street, a new front fence needs a planning permit first.

Front fences in a heritage area

You apply for the permit through City of Greater Geelong, and we'll quote the picket or timber fence.

  3. Near the water on the Bellarine and Surf Coast

From Ocean Grove to Torquay, salt air is hard on steel and on fixings, the screws and brackets that hold a fence together. We check how far you are from the water when we measure.

  4. Farms and rural blocks on the plains

Around Bannockburn and Anakie, north and west of Geelong, the basalt plains are flat to gently rolling farmland. We install wire and ringlock (farm wire mesh) fences there, pulled tight between strainer posts, the heavy end posts that hold the tension.

Next to a street or park, barbed wire must sit 150 mm back or at least 2 m up. Blocks of 2,000 m² or more mainly used for livestock are exempt.

Shared fences

Sharing a boundary fence in Geelong

  1. Usually half each

A dividing fence sits on the boundary between two properties. Under Victoria's Fences Act, neighbours usually split its cost evenly.

  2. Agree before work starts

Get your neighbour's OK before work starts, or follow the Fences Act process, which begins with a fencing notice. That's a written proposal for the work and its cost. If you skip both, vic.gov.au says your neighbour doesn't have to pay anything.

  3. A quote you can show next door

Ask, and we'll write your quote so you can hand a copy to your neighbour.

Ground and weather

Ground and weather around Geelong

When we measure, we also look at the slope, any trees and how easy it is to get to the fence line.

  1. Cracking clay

Out on the basalt plains, the ground can be deep black or grey cracking clay. It drains very slowly and swells when it's wet.

  2. Basalt rock

The basalt plain has stony rises, and many paddocks have rock cleared into piles. If there's rock in the fence line, your quote will say how we'll get the posts in.

  1. Salt air

For roofing and walling, Lysaght rates standard Colorbond steel for 201 to 400 m from breaking surf, or 101 to 200 m from calm water. Between 100 and 200 m from breaking surf, or under 100 m from calm water, it suggests Colorbond Ultra.

  2. Bushfire

CSIRO's bushfire guide suggests a solid fence that won't burn, like steel or brick, and keeping timber fences away from windows and doors.

Permits and rules

Fence permits and rules in Geelong

Whether you need a permit depends mostly on the fence's height and how close it is to the street or a corner. A pool barrier or a heritage area changes it too.

Your council can confirm what applies to your block: the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire or the Borough of Queenscliffe.

Check with council

  • Schedule 3

    Height limits

Back and side fences need a building permit only above 2 m. Near a corner, the limit is 1 m above the footpath within 9 m of where the streets meet.

    Building Regulations
  • Regulation 89

    Front fences

Within 3 m of the street, a front fence can be up to 1.5 m high. On a declared road (a freeway or main arterial road) it can be 2 m, but over 1.5 m needs a building permit. Most of Greater Geelong's residential zones don't set their own limit, so these heights apply.

    Building Regulations
  • Heritage Overlay

    Heritage areas

A Heritage Overlay is a planning control that protects an area's look. Inside one, any fence visible from the street or a public park needs a planning permit. Precincts include Latrobe Terrace, Girton Crescent and The Esplanade.

    Heritage Overlay, clause 43.01
  • Bushfire Management Overlay

    Bushfire areas

Parts of Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, St Leonards, Torquay, Jan Juc and Anglesea are in a Bushfire Management Overlay, for land at higher fire risk. Check with council first.

    Bushfire overlay, clause 44.06
  • Estate guidelines

    New estates

Estate guidelines and your title's covenant can set the material, the height and where a fence stops. Yaringa's guidelines end side fences at least 1 m behind the front wall of the house.

    Yaringa guidelines
  • Pool barriers

    Pool and spa fences

Every pool or spa barrier needs a building permit, and owners lodge a barrier compliance certificate with council every 4 years.

Geelong fencing questions

Fencing in Geelong FAQs

Usually not, for a timber or steel fence. You can build one up to 2 m high on a back or side boundary, or 1.5 m along the front, without a building permit. You do need one for a pool barrier, anything over 2 m, or a fence over 1 m within 9 m of a street corner.

Usually, yes. The half-share is for a sufficient fence, and vic.gov.au's example is a 1.8 m timber paling fence on a house block. If one of you wants something dearer than the old fence, that neighbour generally pays the extra.

Not in every estate. In Armstrong Creek, Warralily, Yaringa and Harriott all ask for timber paling side and rear fences, and Warralily won't consider Colorbond at all.

City of Greater Geelong covers Geelong, Lara and most of the Bellarine. Torquay and Anglesea are in Surf Coast Shire, and Queenscliff is in the Borough of Queenscliffe.

The length, the fence type and height, the ground and access. Clay or rock is slower to dig, and we'll confirm on the quote whether we can take the old fence away. Your free written quote shows the full price.
