Fencing Mornington Peninsula

Timber, steel and farm fencing between the two bays

Mornington Peninsula fencing in timber paling, Colorbond steel and farm wire, installed by our local fencing contractors. We work in Mornington and all over the Peninsula, from Port Phillip Bay to Western Port, and set posts to suit dune sand or granite.

Our installers also hang gates and repair fences. On a slope, they can build a sleeper retaining wall: heavy beams of timber or concrete, set between posts to hold the soil back.

Fences and gates

Fencing contractors on the Mornington Peninsula

A beach house and a horse paddock need different fences, so tell us which you've got and we'll help you pick.

  • Butted treated pine paling fence with dog-eared tops along a backyard boundary

Timber paling fences on the Mornington Peninsula

A timber paling fence gives you a private yard, and it sits well beside a weatherboard beach house or a brick home.

We install treated pine or hardwood palings, butted side by side or lapped so they overlap. A plinth and capping, boards along the bottom and top, are optional.

    Colorbond fencing across the Peninsula

Colorbond steel comes in a long list of colours, so it's easy to match the house or blend into the garden.

There's a grade of Colorbond made for salty coastal air. If you're close to the bay or the ocean beaches, ask us which grade suits your block.

How it works

How we quote and install your fence

  1. Tell us about the job

If the block is sandy, steep or hard to reach, say so in the message box.

  2. We measure if it's needed

For some jobs we visit the block first, so the quote matches what's there.

  3. Your written quote

You pay nothing for it, and you can think it over.

  4. Installation

We dig the holes and set every post first, then the rails go on, then the palings, sheets or wire.

Around the Peninsula

Fencing in Mornington and across the Peninsula

The Shire covers 723 square kilometres and takes in more than 20 separate towns.

  1. Heritage streets in Sorrento, Mornington and Flinders

Sorrento has five heritage precincts: the shops, the foreshore, the cliff top, a residential precinct and East Sorrento. Mornington's Main Street and Esplanade is one too, and Flinders has two.

Tell us the street and the style of the houses, and we'll price a picket or timber fence to match. Getting the planning permit from the Shire is up to you.

  2. Western Port: Hastings, Crib Point and Somers

Some blocks along the Western Port coast are in a flood overlay, a planning control for land that can go under water. Under it, a replacement fence in the same material and spot needs no planning permit, unless it's within 30 m of a waterway.

    Bittern and Crib Point

In parts of these towns, you'll need a planning permit to build a fence. You won't if the lot has a building and the fence is 1.5 m or lower, or more than 3 m from the road.

  3. Farms and acreage in the green wedge

Around 70 per cent of the Shire is green wedge, a planning zone for rural land, and many of its properties are homes on acreage. For horses, we install post and rail, and for sheep and cattle, ringlock (farm wire mesh).

  4. Town rules in Mount Eliza, Baxter and Somerville

In the Mount Eliza Woodland Area, a fence along a road needs a planning permit if it's 1.5 m or taller. It also needs one if less than 70 per cent of it is open.

    Blade fencingDesign overlays, clause 43.02

    Baxter and Somerville town centres

A front fence there should be no taller than 1.5 m if a quarter of it is see-through, or 1.8 m if half is.

Shared fences

Sharing a boundary fence on the Peninsula

  1. Owned by both of you

Boundary fences are joint property, the Shire says. Before work starts, get next door to agree or go through the Fences Act's formal process. Otherwise, vic.gov.au says, they're off the hook for the cost.

    How the Fences Act works
  2. Check where the boundary is

The Shire also warns that an old fence isn't always on the title boundary, so it's worth checking before you replace it.

  3. Don't know who's next door?

With many holiday houses on the Peninsula, the owner next door may live elsewhere. For a shared fence, the Shire's neighbour details form can get you their name and postal address.

Ground and coast

Ground and coast across the Peninsula

Ground changes a lot across the Peninsula, so we check it when we measure.

Installer checking a timber fence post set in fresh concrete
  1. Dune sand

At The Cups, the dunes near and west of Truemans Road, the sand is deep and turns limy lower down. South of Rosebud, weakly cemented sand usually starts about 900 mm down.

  2. Peat at Tootgarook

In the Tootgarook swamp, the topsoil is mostly peat, a soft soil made of rotted plants. The watertable sits very close to the surface.

  3. Red soil at Red Hill

Red Hill's soils formed on old basalt and are deep, red and crumbly. The broken-down rock underneath usually starts deeper than 1.8 m.

  1. Granite on the slopes

Around Arthurs Seat and Mount Martha the soil sits on granite, and on steep slopes rock starts within 1 m. If we expect rock, we'll explain on the quote how we'll get through it.

  2. Salt air on the coast

The Shire's coastline runs for 192 km. For roofing and walling, Lysaght suggests Colorbond Ultra steel within 100 m of calm water or 100 to 200 m from breaking surf.

Permits and rules

Mornington Peninsula fence permits and rules

A standard back fence usually needs no permit. Things change near the street, around a pool, on the coast and in some towns.

Planning rules are site specific, the Shire says, so ask its Planning Services team about your block.

Check with the Shire

  • Building permit

    Building permits

You need one for a front fence higher than 1.5 m, or 1.2 m if it's brick or masonry. A boundary fence taller than 2 m needs one too, as does any fence forming part of a pool barrier. On a corner block, so does a front fence over 1 m within 9 m of the corner.

  • Design and Development Overlay

    Near the foreshore and cliffs

A Design and Development Overlay is a planning control on building design. Under some coastal ones, a fence within 6 m of foreshore land or a cliff needs a planning permit. In the Wildcoast Protection Area near Point Nepean National Park, that distance is 10 m.

    Design overlays, clause 43.02
  • Design and Development Overlay

Fibro and front fences near the coast

These overlays also require a planning permit for a fibro (fibre cement) fence, or a front fence taller than 1.8 m or under half see-through.

    Design overlays, clause 43.02
  • Town rules

    Mornington and Beleura Hill

In the Mornington Activity Centre, the town's shopping and business core, you need a planning permit for any new fence. On Beleura Hill, front fences over 1.5 m high and within 3 m of the street need one.

    Design overlays, clause 43.02
  • Heritage Overlay

    Heritage areas

The Shire's heritage precincts also include Ranelagh Estate in Mount Eliza, Palm Beach Estate in Somers and Station Street in Somerville. The overlay protects how these streets look. Building a fence there that people can see from the road or a park means applying for a planning permit.

    Heritage Overlay, clause 43.01
  • Bushfire

    Bushfire areas

The Shire's Bushfire Management Overlay comes in two levels of risk, and the planning scheme doesn't list which towns it covers. If your block is inside it, talk to the Shire before any fence work starts.

    Bushfire overlay, clause 44.06
  • CFA

    The CFA fence line rule

CFA has a fence line rule for bushfire prone areas, covering boundary fences that were standing before 10 September 2009. It allows clearing plants up to 4 m wide in total, and next door must agree in writing to clearing on their side.

Peninsula fencing questions

Mornington Peninsula fencing FAQs

Not for a back or side fence up to 2 m, unless it's a pool barrier or within 9 m of a street corner. A planning permit can still apply near the foreshore or a cliff, in heritage precincts and in some towns. Look up your address on VicPlan, or ask the Shire's planning team.

Sometimes. Call the Shire on 1300 850 600 to ask if your fence qualifies for shared cost. If the public land isn't owned by the Shire, the Fences Act doesn't make the Shire pay.

The Mornington Peninsula Shire. Next door, Frankston, Frankston South and Langwarrin are Frankston City, and Pearcedale is listed by both the Shire and the City of Casey.

Mostly the metres, the material and the height, then the ground (sand, clay or rock), any slope and access to the fence line. We'll confirm on the quote whether we can take the old fence away, and the quote itself is free.
